Star Awards

The Star Award Program enables the NRAO supervisors to recognize exceptional contributions and noteworthy achievements of their employees or groups of employees. The objectives of this program are:

1) to reward specific one-time achievements (event driven).
2) to provide an incentive for continued excellence through the recognition and reward of exceptional performance.

In short, it is our opportunity to recognize (and brag about!) the creativity, ingenuity, and personal initiative of our outstanding employees!

Michael and TommyTommy and Michael of the VLA cryogenics lab took the initiative to figure out how to repair a stainless steel part that, in the past, had to be sent outside of NRAO. Their work has already saved the observatory $20,000! Jim
Jim repaired a critical piece of track machinery by fabricating failed parts worth $2,000 with $20 worth of material in ten hours, saving the company money and downtime.
GeneGene received his award for outstanding effort in accident prevention through effective training programs and for reducing accidents in the Engineering Services division by 20% in one year.
MelcolmMelcolm developed production techniques and tools that allowed him to build 36 handrail assemblies in just a few months. The labor required to build these handrails would have otherwise been overwhelming. His initiative brought the VLA into complicance with OSHA guidelines quickly and efficiently.
