Q Band Log

Detailed Q band Status:

Log data of the Q-band receivers at each antenna. Gain curves for each antennae are provided by Steve Myers. See http://www.aoc.nrao.edu/~smyers/calibration for more details. Note: Pointing errors listed below are estimated from PN3DB tests which give the short timescale (5-20 min) pointing errors for each antenna.

VIOLET = Non-critical problems
RED = Critical problems, requires immediate attention
Antenna No. Q SN No. Gain curves Status
ANT 1 Q 15
(Q 25)

--nov02 -- Rx successfully reinstalled.
--aug02 -- Rx pulled, LNAs not working.
8mar02 -- latest news on AN1 is that the problem indeed are in the subreflector.
27dec01 -- Receiver swapped with rx Q 15 in AN19 in order to investigate the low and variable gains. Results: Problems stay with AN1; likely antenna optics problem. The receiver at AN1 is now Q 15.
04apr01 -- There are intermittent dropouts in the Q band data. This may be due to a poor subreflector surface which is more obvious now that the surface has been adjusted based on K-band holography. More tests are being run to isolate the problem and determine best way to solve it. If you see dropouts in the data -- it is best to flag the affected times.
17nov00 -- The problem is solved. Greg replaced numerous cables, the amplitudes are a factor of about 2 lower than the best performing antennas. This is reasonable considering that the dish has not been optimized with Q band holography yet. No sign of shorting when antenna is tipped.
10nov00 -- latest data shows receiver is OK. But amplitudes are still bad. Difficult to track down. Something might be shorting when the antenna is tipped.
01nov00 -- Amplitudes low by a factor of 4 to 5 still. It should be better. Back to the drawing board.
30oct00 -- Found water leaking onto front end electronics (F-rack) when antenna was tilted. Water got into the coax -- probable cause of bad data. Coax was dried out.
29oct00 -- Data still bad, must delete all data for this ant.
20oct00 -- 7 mm phases highly unstable (all IFs), Rx temp OK but data is not.
28oct00 -- To = 50-60 K
20oct00 -- Pointing optimized. Receiver looks OK now.
18oct00 -- new rx installed. Still needs to have pointing optimized. Amplitudes are low, probably due to poor pointing.

ANT 2 Q 26
may01 -- Panel adjustments are being made using results from Q-band holography.
05dec00 -- To = 50 K, nice receiver performance.
01dec00 -- New rx installed.

ANT 3 Q 8 ps
16mar00 -- To = 100 K
Antenna history file.
ANT 4 Q 1 ps
01may01 -- The receiver is fixed.
04apr01 -- It appears that there is serious micro phonics oscillations in the rx hardware in the dewar. This may be the root cause of the RCP dropouts. The waveguide is solid, not flex (which is subject to micro phonics). This indicates that an actual connection is bad in the dewar. The rx will have to be brought back to the lab to be fixed.
20mar01 -- Still looking for the cause of the RCP dropouts. Problem is intermittent.
12feb01 -- RCP is now alive but there are dropouts in the signal.
04feb01 -- RCP IFs A & B are dead.
31jan01 -- To = 80-90 K, RCP & LCP look OK.
25oct00 -- To = 100 K
18oct00 -- Receiver installed with a new amplifier.
07sep00 -- Tsys fluctuating, fringe amplitudes intermittent. Remove receiver from antenna for repair
16mar00 -- To = 100 K
Antenna history file.
ANT 5 Q 23 ps
21mar01 -- Full check out complete. Pointing accuracy is now good (see Chris Carilli's page for pointing test results). This rx should be excellent for Q band operations again.
22feb01 -- Antenna back to the array for checkout.
27nov00 -- Antenna in the Barn for overhaul, scheduled to be finished on 13feb00.
10nov00 -- Amplitude drops to 40% nominal value every 4 minutes on a regular cycle. The encoder must be completely rebuilt. Will be done in the Antenna Assembly Building (Barn) when the Ant goes in for major overhaul.
28oct00 -- amplitudes still varying intermittently.
25oct00 -- F3 module was swapped out to try to fix problem.
24oct00 -- fringe amplitudes vary by > 10%. some data blanked at K and Q bands. Rx temperature, To = 47 K on all IFs so Rx is healthy.
20aug00 -- To = 50 K, very nice.
16aug00 -- successfully installed

ANT 6 Q 12
(Q 9)
ps
26feb03 -- Rx SN12 installed. A bad LCP amplifier caused a problem when this rx was in AN13, which was fixed by replacing the LNAs at both sides with new MAP style LNAs, decresing the rx temp by 15K. T_0 still a bit high.No fringes yet; delays, pointing etc needs to be set.
22dec00 -- drop out problem fixed.
09nov00 -- occasional drop outs observed in raw data on ANT6 baselines at Q band during a run.
16mar00 -- To = 70 K
Antenna history file.

Antenna history file.
ANT 8 Q 2 ps
16mar00 -- To = 90 K
ANT 9
22feb01 -- ANT 9 in the barn to correct the positions of the K band receiver so a new Q band receiver can be installed. In the mean time, Q band SN 24 is installed on ANT 23.
15feb01 -- solar cal amplifier fixed by Bob Hayward.
26jan01 -- Forget it, the solar cal amplifier is unstable. It will be stripped off the Q band receiver so the receiver can be installed without it.
22jan01 -- Solar cal is here and being installed.
jan01 -- Awaiting end-of-year delivery of repaired solar cal amp from Spacek/SW. Expect rx installation after solar cal has been added.
Antenna history file.
ANT 10 Q 18 ps
07jun00 -- sensitivity improved after K-band template panel adjustment. Still 30% low, will have to live with this until Q-band holography can be done next year.
23may00 -- panel adjustments complete.
11may00 -- panel readjustment scheduled completion date to improve Q and K band sensitivity (expect Q-band gains to be a factor of 2 low until panel adjustment is complete).
16mar00 -- To = 50 K LCP & 85 K RCP
05jan00 -- To = 45 K LCP & 85 K RCP (big spread due to amplifier response).
Antenna history file.
ANT 11 Q 5 ps
10nov00 -- data looks good here.
10oct00 -- Rotation correction adjusted to give something reasonable.
25sep00 -- Subreflector rotation correction with elevation wrong for ANT 11 at Q band. This caused pointing errors that changed with elevation.

Antenna history file.
ANT 12 Q 9
(Q 13)
ps
16mar00 -- To = 60 K

03may01 -- Panel adjustments made using results from Q-band holography.
04apr01 -- Amplitudes are also low by almost a factor of 2. This could be due to a poor surface. Surface panel adjustments based on Q-band holography measurements will be completed within the next few weeks (subject to wind constraints) to determine if surface accuracy or dropouts are the cause of the low power.
04apr01 -- There have been reports of intermittent dropouts in the rx power. Bob Hayward is running tests to see if micro phonics oscillations are the culprit. If you see dropouts in the data -- it is best to flag the affected times.
16mar00 -- To = 60 K
